Sentencing Reform
There’s a growing movement across the country for sentencing and prison reform. Many are realizing our current system does not meet the needs of societies current problems. We can no longer afford, both financially or socially, to maintain the attitude of “lock’em up and throw away the key”.
Here are two recent articles on the topic. The first Op-Ed comes from the Denver Post (yes, Colorado) and the second from WBNS-10TV in Columbus, OH
What makes the Denver Post article noteworthy is the article’s author – The executive director of Colorado Department of Corrections! The article begins:
“Our criminal justice system is overburdened and costly, and is not making us safer.
As executive director of the Colorado Department of Corrections (DOC), the safety of Coloradans is my first priority. Every day I work to ensure that dangerous people are behind bars; that our prisons are both secure and environments conducive to rehabilitation; and that when our prisoners have completed their sentences, they are equipped with skills and support to make their transition back into our communities as successful as possible.”
